Three Forts Challenge – 1st May 2016

Most of my training for this year’s Brighton marathon was off-road, up on the South Downs. It’s my favourite place to run now – far more relaxing than the roads and it has really helped my endurance. After the marathon, hoping to make the most of my training, I entered the The Three Forts Challenge, also known as  The Tough One. It’s a 27 mile route on the South Downs, starting in Worthing. It takes in the ancient hill forts of Cissbury Ring, Chanctonbury Ring and Devil’s Dyke. 3450 ft of climbing and nearly 6 hours to complete. What was I thinking of?!

Tough it certainly is but to take your mind off the aches and pains, the route is set in stunning countryside and brilliantly marshalled by some wonderful volunteers.

I ran the whole distance with my friend Paul who I’ve been running with for years now – we started running 5km parkruns at Hove park, 7 years ago and now look at us!

Coming up to the finish after nearly 6 hours felt like a real achievement and it has really changed my focus on what I’ll enter this year. The Moyleman in Lewes and Beachy Head marathon are definitely on my list of things to do and I’ll certainly be back for The Tough One next year.

Running eveningThere’s a fantastic running community in Brighton & Hove that caters for all abilities, including first timers. We are a group of running enthusiasts who want to share some of the great benefits that running can bring. For many, it’s not just physical health but also the positive impact on mental health and well being. There really is something for everyone.

Did you know, for example, that every Saturday at 9am, approximately 1000 people aged from 8 to 80, run a 5km parkrun in Brighton and Hove?

We have a number of speakers :
Lisa Smith-Wallace, Club Captain for Brighton & Hove Women’s Running Club (B&HWRC) will explain how first timers are encouraged and supported. Brigitte Groves has led groups of runners training for their first attempt at the Brighton marathon. Brigitte was also a founder member of B&HWRC.
Paul Zara started running as a complete beginner about 6 years ago when someone persuaded him to try parkrun in Hove park. Paul is now one of a rare group who has run in each one of the Brighton marathons. Paul, will be talking about how running gives you a different perspective of the city.
Kevin Betts took on the challenge of running 52 marathons in one year and survived to tell the tale. Kevin is a regular at Hove park parkrun where he completes the 5km course pushing a buggy.
Nick Rivett from NickRivettSports will be explaining Gait Analysis in which running efficiency can be analysed as you run on a machine.

For my part, I started running with Paul Zara and have now taken part in many 5k , 10k, half and full marathons. I particularly enjoy running on the South Downs. I have been volunteer coordinator at Hove park parkrun for the last 3 years

I was reminded yesterday that my self imposed ‘alcohol free week’ could be replaced by an alcohol free beer instead. With just one training session left before the Brighton marathon on Sunday, @paulzara got out a couple of bottles of Beck’s Blue alcohol free lager.  Quite refreshing and since it tastes so good, I reckon the marathon organisers should investigate having a couple of Beck’s refreshment points about the 20 mile mark. That should lift spirits no end 🙂

Friday morning is the last training run. Yey!  It will be a  ‘check out you running gear’ 5km and with any luck I will be injury free at the end and raring to go on Sunday. The forecast for Sunday is looking cooler, windier and wetter than either of the last two years. I think that should be good news. Wish me luck!

Green shoots appearing.

My poor allotment has progressed little over the last few weeks. Training for the marathon took priority of course and I didn’t want to do my back in like I did in January when I tried to be helpful and clear away ice on the pavement. Worryingly, my allotment neighbours have been planting with indecent haste, making my own efforts look less than spectacular.

On Saturday, I went to Rushfields plant centre, near Saddlecoombe. What a great place! I now have enough seeds to get started: courgettes, beetroot, shallots, potatoes and sweetcorn. Hopefully get everything planted by next weekend.

It’s only a week since the Brighton marathon but it seems ages ago now. I decided to do Parkrun on Saturday – great as usual – and managed a very gentle 37 mins! Sunday was the London marathon – really enjoyed the build up but felt a bit sorry for the runners when i started to rain heavily before the start. That would really have changed things at Brighton but we were lucky. My cousin Claire and good friend Lance were running so  it was fun tracking them on the 5km tracker that was provided. By the afternoon I was itching to get out and run so did an hour up to Patcham and up through the woods to the Windmill. Ended up running through a cow field near to the windmill near Mill Road (the same one that’s in the image at the top of my blog ) By the windmill, there are sheep grazing. I’m in no hurry to start a new running challenge but I did read that the entry for Brighton marathon 2011 opens on 10th May. Definitely doing that again – the pain of last week is beginning to fade!

Just leaving Preston Park after the start.

I did it! Without doubt, the Brighton marathon was the hardest, most painful run I’ve ever done but it was such a fantastic day. I keep seeing snapshots of the event in my mind – it’s hard to imagine that it all happened in one day.
Met up with my training buddy, Paul, about 8am and got down to Preston Park in time to join in with the pre marathon warm up – dance aerobics style! Everyone was up for it and the weather just added to the occasion. We moved into the starting corrals and as soon as the race began I started to hear cheering and I can honestly say it seemed continuous all the way around the course.  The opening 13 miles were good – I needed to drink much more water than normal but I felt fine. As I got to 16 miles I was starting to ache – hamstrings mainly – so had to stop and stretch a couple of times. By mile 21 I was really starting to flag and the bleak surroundings at Shoreham Power Station didn’t help much. I then caught sight of the 4 hour pacer and followed him home to get a chip time of 3 hours 55 mins. Click here to see a video of my finish. The last 5 miles seemed to go on forever and I just wanted it to stop.  I must find out who the pacer was because I wouldn’t have made it under 4 hours without him.
As soon as I crossed the line, I could hardly walk and just wanted to sit down. Would have been great to sink my legs into the sea but I didn’t have the energy to get there! Eventually got back home and had a great meal at our local pub with Paul and our families. There were some other runners there as well and everyone just wanted to talk about it.

To all of those people who got up at 5am to volunteer on the day – I am really grateful. The support and organisation was brilliant and I’m already thinking about next year! I managed to raise £615 for the National Hospital Development Foundation. My page closes in 3 months so I’m still going to try and reach my £1000 target. Thank you to everyone who has supported me – I really appreciate it.

A lone blue amongst the pinks.

Having now had a few days to digest the marathon pack information, I’ve just discovered that my blue race number has some significance. When I registered way back in July(?) I was asked to predict a finishing time. Stupidly I must have put down 4 hours and, as a result, I’ve been put in the 3.45 to 4 hour group (blue).

Race Day Information

Each runner’s number is colour coded to show their predicted finish times and the corrals are arranged to match these.

The colours are as follows:  (from Brighton marathon website)

2 hours 45minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes
3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours
4 hours to 4 hours 15 minutes
4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes
4hours 30 minutes to 5 hours
5 hours to 6 hours

All of my training has been, at best, 9 mins 30s per mile, so I’ll be pushing it  to beat 4 hours and I don’t really want to seize up at the end having gone too fast. After all I’ve got to face my students on Monday!

So  I may just sit in amongst the pink runners and finish around 4h15m.

The Brighton marathon is four weeks tomorrow.

Had planned to do a half marathon starting at 6am this morning, with the aim of finishing in time to get down to Hove Park and be a marshall for Parkrun.  As it turned out, I left a bit late and decided to try 18 miles. I did it in exactly 3 hours with an ache in every joint. Really enjoyed going out so early, no cars about so I could run in the road for most of the way. Went out to Portslade and then back along the seafront all the way to Rottingdean and back.  The tide was out, making all the rock pools visible from the undercliff walk.

Despite the pain of standing in the sea after last week’s run, I manfully got straight into a cold bath for 5 mins when I got back. Can’t say I enjoyed it – if I’m honest, I wailed like a baby- much to the amusement of the rest of the family but I don’t have any aches now so maybe there’s something to be said  for it.

Although the marathon is one month away, my long distance runs start to tail off after the next two weeks. Next Sunday is 18 mile, with possibly a full marathon the week after. Can’t imagine it.

It’s a scary thought – I have to run 26.2 miles in one month.  I was supposed to do another half marathon today but decided to push it a bit further and try for 18 miles. I had intended to leave at 6am and get back just in time to be a marshall at Hove Parkrun.  Actually set off at 6.40 gatting back exactly 3 hours later.
